When we refer to speculative design, we make draw upon a wide of methods or approaches which variously get referred to as design fiction, critical design, design futuring, futures studies, anticipatory ethnography, and more. The key quality for us is we use design practices to develop scenarios, situations, and experiences that enable participants to explore near-future situations in a meaningful way. We use these methods to generate insights around the implications of new technologies on society, culture and the world at large, and to engage in “co-speculation” with the public to shape more equitable futures.
